。以色列分配土地的顺序是犹大第一,约瑟的子孙第二。代上5:2暗示了这种顺序:“犹大胜过一切弟兄,君王也是从他而出;长子的名分却归约瑟”。所以约书亚主持分配迦南下的土地分成三个阶段:一,把犹大支派安置在巴勒斯坦南部的各城中。二,把以法莲和玛拿西支派安置在在中部和北部的一些要塞中。三,把其余的支派安置在犹大和约瑟的子孙所留下的地方,以及他们领土的周围,好得到他们的保护。作者描写约瑟子孙的疆界不及犹大支派的领土那么详细,所以我们较难确定位置;也没有像犹大支派那样列出详细的城市清单。这样做的原因不详。有人说约书亚是约瑟的子孙,负责分配本支派的领土,不必与人商讨细节,其疆域和城市也就不记下来了。叙述中的还有一个特点就是以法莲和玛拿西支派的关联性:以法莲支派占领了玛拿西支派的一些城市。这似乎是出于善意的安排。
从约旦河起
。作者在这里描述了约瑟子孙领土的起点。从约旦河对岸的耶利哥起,以耶利哥东边的水为界,就是后来以利沙施行神迹的苏丹泉(the“Sultan's Spring”)。边界从苏丹泉向东,离开南边的耶利哥。
旷野

从伯特利到路斯
